They are described as dark skinned but probably look less like Arabs or Moores and more like Isreali's. Hard to say. Either way, Aram, the central-most Tuatha'an, should be played by David Alpay.<br />
<br />

<br />
Moving on now to the Sheinarans. The residents of Sheinar mostly only appear in the first two books (but a few of them show up later), and strangely enough, there are actually quite a few of them. The most visible one is easily the half-mad "Prophet of the Dragon" Masema Dagar. We want a guy who can look handsome but completely nuts, and Mark Ryder can do that.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGZCaXfSN68zWICoGudZIOdELo2QbGZdw7u5u2D6OIsSxAM6oKuGmmfMsWG1cg6FUTCzmn2VaEHO7uNv37pWwyZEZeBP5CFz5nQPb2stGO5bGXTC-U_VCDXiBOE07CpyI51mO0alZZIT-c/s1600/Masema.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGZCaXfSN68zWICoGudZIOdELo2QbGZdw7u5u2D6OIsSxAM6oKuGmmfMsWG1cg6FUTCzmn2VaEHO7uNv37pWwyZEZeBP5CFz5nQPb2stGO5bGXTC-U_VCDXiBOE07CpyI51mO0alZZIT-c/s320/Masema.jpg" width="213" /></a><br />
Violence-Sniffer Hurin is one of the more prominent entirely heroic Sheinarans in the story. He is described as lean with grey hair. Somehow Jed Brophy from the Peter Jackson Tolkien movies makes me think of him.<br />

Repentant Darkfriend Ingtar Shinowa should have a kind of handsome, but dour look, like Matt Devere's. He's another guy whose work I'm not all that familiar with, but his look is right.<br />
<br />
Foul-mouthed, one-eyed lieutenant Uno Nomesta is a fun but badass role, and I can see Dylan Smith having a great time with it. Too bad he's only a major character for one book.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI_fl8NlRzSRWVkPqiVpbd8pJL_i_D241D-VF1M8rV2RdaOpAln-cRxgv4PYPfjKPaiv2Qlhhp3ohRGL4xYHH8R2W0Jgw3OM3uiAcbJrSggXCqqSnHJaNfn6bozoQKyP_IrsaHdQFO3zro/s1600/Uno.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI_fl8NlRzSRWVkPqiVpbd8pJL_i_D241D-VF1M8rV2RdaOpAln-cRxgv4PYPfjKPaiv2Qlhhp3ohRGL4xYHH8R2W0Jgw3OM3uiAcbJrSggXCqqSnHJaNfn6bozoQKyP_IrsaHdQFO3zro/s320/Uno.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />

Finally, guardsman Ragan is a somewhat minor character, but shows up a few times, so I figured I'd cast him. Aaron Jackson looks appropriate enough.<br />

I like Biddie Hodson for the role, because she looks strong and statuesque, like a Valkyrie. She actually looks very close to how I pictured Birgitte from the beginning.<br />

Lews Therin Telamon, the man who led the assault against the Dark One, sealed the Bore, trapping him and most of the Foresaken, and was the first to be driven mad by the taint, will appear in the first episode prologue, and later show up as a ghost that only Rand can see. He will be played by David Hall Page.<br />

George Innes is a good fit for this character.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUFoIpuMsk9yOTe1fZgLikDl2LXTfGB8zmflFhB_ejQTBI3BJlNAkgvAAHRkrLIhyphenhyphenzmsP33FHXc9QPqDDm0DJ2CUex8niKaR2q5SXw1BiAVGvSZ_M_2BEftJysR6bgCvy4CeTCBPRPinTc/s1600/Artur.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUFoIpuMsk9yOTe1fZgLikDl2LXTfGB8zmflFhB_ejQTBI3BJlNAkgvAAHRkrLIhyphenhyphenzmsP33FHXc9QPqDDm0DJ2CUex8niKaR2q5SXw1BiAVGvSZ_M_2BEftJysR6bgCvy4CeTCBPRPinTc/s320/Artur.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Although he'll only appear the once (as far as I know) I had to cast Artur "Hawkwing" Paendrag because he's such a well-known figure in this world. However, I didn't want to pick a super-well-known dude, so I went with Richard Trinder, who fits the description well enough.<br />
<br />

Finally, I know Gaidal Cain only appears once, and I know that he's supposed to be short, but Matthew Willig looks so much like I always imagined him that I simply had to cast him.<br />

Honestly, as not the world's biggest Seanchan fan, I kinda don't want to spend too long on this entry. They're important, but kind of annoying. So in this entry, it's gonna be just pictures, no write-ups.<br />

<br />
Mark Mitchinson, who I am unfamiliar with, looks to have the strength combined with everyman feel that is necessary for Tam al'Thor. Tam may not be used much, but he's a very important character, and it will be important for this role to have the right-looking man in it. He looks like Tam to me.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjb1Azrl7ey_211dotkK97UXMwR-9Cgq7ul4OnKZ-o0qpqnLpH_lZQJO0qnZ1gfsRppGM4nKtni0HUjGEa72NIIH3GiolwWp1bOjgr1f2kPKQaoCQkJEdNRBePh-bQ1aJoINutPqJO1jEf/s1600/Cenn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjb1Azrl7ey_211dotkK97UXMwR-9Cgq7ul4OnKZ-o0qpqnLpH_lZQJO0qnZ1gfsRppGM4nKtni0HUjGEa72NIIH3GiolwWp1bOjgr1f2kPKQaoCQkJEdNRBePh-bQ1aJoINutPqJO1jEf/s320/Cenn.jpg" width="320" /></a>Cenn Buie, the elderly thatcher/trouble-maker, is a memorable role so I decided to cast a somewhat recognizable face in it. Karl Johnson is mostly known for his work on <i>Rome</i> but he's a character actor that can acclimate well to this character.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9247L9e_5jqgf6NbP19wn1FG0h5X5HQpCFyQBED_FUMbyVzCrCyW3JQwXT-02D6RR1DV7Y3MzbY8fC071lBDku8tOi8IIX3IjKqXjN5lfY74Ic2iU78i3Jx-xvAJphlwCHZzqgrAhHzDT/s1600/Bran.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9247L9e_5jqgf6NbP19wn1FG0h5X5HQpCFyQBED_FUMbyVzCrCyW3JQwXT-02D6RR1DV7Y3MzbY8fC071lBDku8tOi8IIX3IjKqXjN5lfY74Ic2iU78i3Jx-xvAJphlwCHZzqgrAhHzDT/s1600/Bran.jpg" /></a></div>
Other than being fat, friendly and somewhat wise (for a Two Rivers man), Bran al'Vere isn't really fleshed out much. However, he will show up in at least the first two episodes, so I'm casting him with David Verrey, who I mostly know through his role on <i>Doctor Who</i> as one of the Slitheen.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhee-ElT8-JoKw5CJEDI0AqNbcYe3vXUgz94XSeBHLzQZJvTr99zReMKeqaCPjpyaRQDYuteKte1R6rX-zObmuWr0ldqbm4SAAfebJYNZpCy0INtv7Gsqnc0_-TbVE6CzaxEOGP7daChSV3/s1600/Abell.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhee-ElT8-JoKw5CJEDI0AqNbcYe3vXUgz94XSeBHLzQZJvTr99zReMKeqaCPjpyaRQDYuteKte1R6rX-zObmuWr0ldqbm4SAAfebJYNZpCy0INtv7Gsqnc0_-TbVE6CzaxEOGP7daChSV3/s320/Abell.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Finally, Abell Cauthon fights alongside Tam al'Thor against the Trolloc invasion of Emond's fields in Book Four, so really he needs to be included. I chose Joseph Rye because he looks like he could be Augustus Prew's father.<br />

I gotta say, this choice may change if this guy's star rises as high as I'm thinking it will, but Aiden Turner just looks so close to how I always pictured Mazrim Taim that I'm sticking with him for now. Plus, he's a huge part; the anti-hero turned open villain is one of the more interesting characters on the show, and would be a joy for any actor, I hope.<br />

Logain Ablar, the first man to declare himself the Dragon Reborn in this story (the other being Taim himself), is described as being a powerful-looking man in his middle years. I like the idea of Steve Bacic (another Canadian!) taking this role. It's smallish at first, but becomes very important later. <br />

Damer Flinn, Jur Grady and Jahar Narishma can kind of be the "face" of the Asha'man; the old timer, the muscle and Rand's yes-man. They're not really important apart from being Asha'man, but they do have some distinct personality traits (Damer's the better healer, Grady and Narishma the young talented ones).<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Neal Campbell</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Initially, I wasn't going to cast Fedwin Morr, because he really is a kind of minor character. However, the scene where he loses his mind and has to be "put down", more or less, is touching, and necessary, I think, since it reminds us what all Asha'man fear happening to them. I think some time should be spent building up Fedwin before he dies, in order to emotionally invest the viewers. I found an unknown actor named Neal Campbell to play him, based mainly on his look. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the character of Fager Neald always makes me think of that guy who thinks he's hot stuff but it really a hot mess. Grow a moustache on him, and Kyle Summercorn will do nicely.<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; text-align: right;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kyle Summercorn</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Finally, I've got Daman Malone as Androl Genhald. The character is kind of flat, and is mostly a means of transportation, but he's used a lot, so I cast him.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4WHWisyiSB48ZnYcazamXAncQ20SQ_AhoYy2jCmSMp8FLQ6r11ea-4qPR7vJo0eTtUpMT7pUFU6bf2ueh_Zlwu8AT3x9vwRKJAgt7RLvyjtoLAv9MYoLDvQTerGkve_sK-Vy35fK06EQk/s1600/Berelain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="155" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4WHWisyiSB48ZnYcazamXAncQ20SQ_AhoYy2jCmSMp8FLQ6r11ea-4qPR7vJo0eTtUpMT7pUFU6bf2ueh_Zlwu8AT3x9vwRKJAgt7RLvyjtoLAv9MYoLDvQTerGkve_sK-Vy35fK06EQk/s320/Berelain.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Berelain sur Paendrag Paeron is probably more good than bad, but she's also a seductress and entirely out for her own purposes. She needs to be, to cop an annoying popular meme "sexy and know it" (Oh, god, I can already see the "I'm Berelain and I know it" memes). I chose Gwendoline Taylor, who, judging from pictures of her, can pull this off.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWKhNrznQ-ziWjX00HcHfMqmVhp_M7sv-DjfjK_n6eg-fZ1lS0ccsb3EtihouCIleDdZPuENDyKVThlIMsWPP9zdam-OTweyq_UR36QGax84P88EVVg7NxskRGcSJvXQrzw9c00N5H2FYl/s1600/Gawyn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWKhNrznQ-ziWjX00HcHfMqmVhp_M7sv-DjfjK_n6eg-fZ1lS0ccsb3EtihouCIleDdZPuENDyKVThlIMsWPP9zdam-OTweyq_UR36QGax84P88EVVg7NxskRGcSJvXQrzw9c00N5H2FYl/s1600/Gawyn.jpg" /></a></div>
I like Max Benitz as Prince Gawyn Trakand, Elayne's brother and conflicted Youngling leader. Gawyn is a supporting character, but could be an interesting one as he is Egwene's primary love interest despite technically working for the wrong side. Benitz is mostly familiar to me thanks to <i>Master & Commander</i> but he's grown a bit and looks tougher and ready for a role like this one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9x8B4Ae4AfV1mDyRWDEADlOLnZ4ch9vVMnpGg8-xErkXDqBnkmp-1H454Gy0E8Gk6laqpic3_EIc0ng71LHgjg9nXxvdz3N4DUBTCiclVvBziw4NdXCo4lgVIubRUPYyUIfnvje8HCP6o/s1600/Luca.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9x8B4Ae4AfV1mDyRWDEADlOLnZ4ch9vVMnpGg8-xErkXDqBnkmp-1H454Gy0E8Gk6laqpic3_EIc0ng71LHgjg9nXxvdz3N4DUBTCiclVvBziw4NdXCo4lgVIubRUPYyUIfnvje8HCP6o/s1600/Luca.jpg" /></a></div>
Circus master Valan Luca is a fan favorite, and one of those classic unaligned characters who acts as an obstacle but not because he's genuinely bad. He's a fun character and I'd love to cast my first choice, Oded Fehr, but Fehr is more of a leading man, at least on TV, and probably wouldn't take this supporting role. So, I went with Aaron Jakubenko.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1WSocQMbPFqrsQ1ZF1y8z74-rcQqrSpW3ZHbg-bQf4JxuG5GMhOcDv3Q4IJraw7NAOktBVrD5QG1qC5Z1VK9cSuVIw9DinT7-5YBhGXHCiR4ds1se1bTW1rXFYfviFe8n-l1TrSNsTLaX/s1600/Balwer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1WSocQMbPFqrsQ1ZF1y8z74-rcQqrSpW3ZHbg-bQf4JxuG5GMhOcDv3Q4IJraw7NAOktBVrD5QG1qC5Z1VK9cSuVIw9DinT7-5YBhGXHCiR4ds1se1bTW1rXFYfviFe8n-l1TrSNsTLaX/s1600/Balwer.jpg" /></a></div>
Then there's Sebban Balwer, who starts off as Pedron Niall's secretary but isn't really "aligned" with the Whitecloaks per se, and later becomes part of Perrin's entourage. But I'm not sure if we can call him "good". I always got the feeling something was "up" with him. He's repeatedly described as older, shrunken and "dried up", like a bird. So I picked <i>Rome</i>'s Alan Williams.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikGRzeiHvRnwTejZihKRH1lcmiGN14kL6hci_b0vU0jxkAIPt8BiQm-R3TMnkDvkWtDv9uerwRPQjr9dbm5DKwh3fkmPCAyMb6G04U2jGgk2QF_1IBnDOIaEUwkSCEpHzDgPllfLFd7XDz/s1600/Alliandre.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikGRzeiHvRnwTejZihKRH1lcmiGN14kL6hci_b0vU0jxkAIPt8BiQm-R3TMnkDvkWtDv9uerwRPQjr9dbm5DKwh3fkmPCAyMb6G04U2jGgk2QF_1IBnDOIaEUwkSCEpHzDgPllfLFd7XDz/s320/Alliandre.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
Alliandre Kigarin, the queen of Ghealdan, probably should be in the "good" column due to how she's pretty much the definition of "broken bird". I'm putting her here because I'm not sure where Jordan was headed with this character. I also don't know what nationality she's really supposed to resemble, but being beautiful, having dark hair and kind of a long nose made me think Soraya Radford would work in this part.<br />

Another broken bird, this one by the Seanchan instead of the Shaido, Amathera Lounalt could easily be played by the lovely Kaniehtiio Horn, who is Canadian. This is a smaller, nondescript role so really it's not a big deal who is cast here.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC4BzaAXX9vp6YVx949v6h1MYQ8KQYx2G5wrWvXag1GE5zeKK1TKpfcOQajbW_-4f_uUunzzKeZylaUUSV8ATSD-wMnrmQthjMPy9Rr-ic-xxFLW0ya0cXW7WNjDVcJY0sE53M1JKyJSi8/s1600/Weiramon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC4BzaAXX9vp6YVx949v6h1MYQ8KQYx2G5wrWvXag1GE5zeKK1TKpfcOQajbW_-4f_uUunzzKeZylaUUSV8ATSD-wMnrmQthjMPy9Rr-ic-xxFLW0ya0cXW7WNjDVcJY0sE53M1JKyJSi8/s320/Weiramon.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
One role that could be a lot of fun is the idiot High Lord Weiramon of Tear. Of course, he's actually a Darkfriend, but one of the few that is surprising because his idiocy is frequently used as comic relief. Keeping the Mediterranean look of the Tairens in mind, I chose Declan Conlon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-99LUonBYFgufFPCf44-nbuDvPdeZVz-ESExcew08Ei4ZTsTElj-vQyOq0WuXOY6j4UxQTVkgxVoXbrpCsUZ6V1bhFvONhH-hx-oAOsDWE78SIqtuzrmwcePKhDknwGxswXBaivCCLkGJ/s1600/Dyeline.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-99LUonBYFgufFPCf44-nbuDvPdeZVz-ESExcew08Ei4ZTsTElj-vQyOq0WuXOY6j4UxQTVkgxVoXbrpCsUZ6V1bhFvONhH-hx-oAOsDWE78SIqtuzrmwcePKhDknwGxswXBaivCCLkGJ/s1600/Dyeline.jpg" /></a></div>
For the smaller but long-term role of Dyeline Taravin, I chose Joanne Farrell, again, mostly for her look.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJnHvyKWkRbgXma5jRSsRrwpMBCxZlwTtSknpYwgAPe4_lKryAOhTZVXNobq2fMs9-Cg6Sw6ee6skoj9VBDG8fOn0a-R9ox8jP5I1PcqI77Hv4SRtmHFNnqwT3BVUbSLitWb1ZCA9tJx8e/s1600/Alivia.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJnHvyKWkRbgXma5jRSsRrwpMBCxZlwTtSknpYwgAPe4_lKryAOhTZVXNobq2fMs9-Cg6Sw6ee6skoj9VBDG8fOn0a-R9ox8jP5I1PcqI77Hv4SRtmHFNnqwT3BVUbSLitWb1ZCA9tJx8e/s1600/Alivia.gif" /></a></div>
Alivia, the three-century old former <i>damane</i>, is fierce and hates the Seanchan with every fibre of her being. I'm still not ready to call her "good" but at least she's on Rand's side, for the moment. Penny Downie will play her.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB5Tt1yXA1k7DKD_L4Zq2yoK4D-mq-0aySRKjp5qAyrxDNuugt4KqFmCfdEcxEZXeS8o7FZ_xUk6ckQEag2SlU90K_fn36gIVPol5kwlLpSaGJNItH4fdsXBQal0ykIAnlaVbod56PRC2h/s1600/Else.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB5Tt1yXA1k7DKD_L4Zq2yoK4D-mq-0aySRKjp5qAyrxDNuugt4KqFmCfdEcxEZXeS8o7FZ_xUk6ckQEag2SlU90K_fn36gIVPol5kwlLpSaGJNItH4fdsXBQal0ykIAnlaVbod56PRC2h/s1600/Else.jpg" /></a>Else Grinwell, an incidental character from the first two books, shows up a few times to cause trouble, mostly by being a silly, boy-crazy idiot. I wasn't going to cast her at all, but then I saw Amber Beattie, who looks so much like the character that I just couldn't resist.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6da7_ujN99nlLL-xFhYna1jnLvHhrGv1MWSbMMg-xbYlk7L-N2iifx_30cxEGMMjZx5BMvcVGM7F03ugBwiziC8VmwSdhggnFDSJeLYB7XAxfkDzlc_KH5UlCaaTeu0lR6j0z2rZjCQgE/s1600/Aludra.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6da7_ujN99nlLL-xFhYna1jnLvHhrGv1MWSbMMg-xbYlk7L-N2iifx_30cxEGMMjZx5BMvcVGM7F03ugBwiziC8VmwSdhggnFDSJeLYB7XAxfkDzlc_KH5UlCaaTeu0lR6j0z2rZjCQgE/s320/Aludra.jpg" width="212" /></a>The Illuminators only show up incidentially, but Mistress Aludra's quest to invent the cannon must mean she plays an important part. Really, she isn't described much besides being black, being middle-aged but still pretty, and having dreds. Anyone can play her, but Ayisha Issa looks pretty close to how I pictured her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho-QJoMIMo2V_c-l2jumaTPlNoY4uDFGv0lGUIxktF9wb86aGrfuXvgXTQYx3W0k8AB0aKoLdtmxkSZkXBOCSfoL3fX1UnK7bfhCgqFagKbIAT7446rhbD5ReZeo2fI_x_46cMlh0dXQnB/s1600/Tylin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho-QJoMIMo2V_c-l2jumaTPlNoY4uDFGv0lGUIxktF9wb86aGrfuXvgXTQYx3W0k8AB0aKoLdtmxkSZkXBOCSfoL3fX1UnK7bfhCgqFagKbIAT7446rhbD5ReZeo2fI_x_46cMlh0dXQnB/s320/Tylin.jpg" width="254" /></a></div>
Now we come to a few characters that I'm not certain need to be included, but I cast anyway because I figured maybe they could feature in one or two episodes, and the fans would ask where they are if I didn't cast them. First is the Queen of Altara, Tylin Mitsobar, played by Liz May Brice, who is the right age and is still a handsome woman despite her age, which is also true of Tylin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjglciVvDkQg5vOXsb5SLAzyFmXtOXwan_UEugs_AKsUvPzS0u91mlg5jHWLNVtU4bIfghNkF9ALMnnAaX1tHj64ardiDN7_-pra-5bWHnjyPBxLz13-K_l7eRFo1Fi_QTG8WaIaHoiNSdi/s1600/Beslan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjglciVvDkQg5vOXsb5SLAzyFmXtOXwan_UEugs_AKsUvPzS0u91mlg5jHWLNVtU4bIfghNkF9ALMnnAaX1tHj64ardiDN7_-pra-5bWHnjyPBxLz13-K_l7eRFo1Fi_QTG8WaIaHoiNSdi/s320/Beslan.jpg" width="205" /></a></div>
Next we have her son, Beslan. As he won't appear often, I chose <i>Golden Boy</i>'s Theo James to play him, but I chiefly know James thanks to <i>Downton Abbey</i>. He's got the olive skin and good looks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXUTy1hd8rS1W15u2sNqZPHWO2o0HK_k0fNJ7QRD9mJCti33sh9rvYAlkXU0lddmQURAD-xMwEmh8y8Xs5pmExX5ABDaaTNAvUAOfz9QiD77W_SAeA9O5vtYteGDEOd2PKFsfFrx6qrtsj/s1600/Setalle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXUTy1hd8rS1W15u2sNqZPHWO2o0HK_k0fNJ7QRD9mJCti33sh9rvYAlkXU0lddmQURAD-xMwEmh8y8Xs5pmExX5ABDaaTNAvUAOfz9QiD77W_SAeA9O5vtYteGDEOd2PKFsfFrx6qrtsj/s320/Setalle.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
Setalle Anan, the innkeeper who secretly works for the Kin, could be played by Frances Barber.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6bjworNFnoODSpnIQfOYK_KhGo3Qxmbp3QjFnKTWcz7pbIT1Hff8UqlMgw7mJYvPKEWlinUI9wgpdZntriZ1IuaBmX8Rgy-eXRzt7vJ51FbhBeGBXSs_cea6rsXivkZhMK4jZHbdA2fki/s1600/Reanne.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6bjworNFnoODSpnIQfOYK_KhGo3Qxmbp3QjFnKTWcz7pbIT1Hff8UqlMgw7mJYvPKEWlinUI9wgpdZntriZ1IuaBmX8Rgy-eXRzt7vJ51FbhBeGBXSs_cea6rsXivkZhMK4jZHbdA2fki/s1600/Reanne.jpg" /></a></div>
Meanwhile Reanne Corley, leader of the Kin, could be played by Annette Crosby.<br />

He's repeatedly described as being "perfectly beautiful" for a man, but it's hard to know what everyone would consider "perfect" male beauty. Warren Christie, who was in the recently cancelled <i>Alphas</i>, seems like he'd fit the part, though.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiytXlQhCBpsQ_XoILgFR5UG3E6omQOGu5HslKqyb0hBKdNiAZcQJyCfg1KrJ54z5RdJgser03nAIgpMVPHsqfeD5MnlAeP3W56cWzyxnPT8_7B8F6cY5MwBUcelSfmxrQUwDjsJunWOyaE/s1600/Niall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiytXlQhCBpsQ_XoILgFR5UG3E6omQOGu5HslKqyb0hBKdNiAZcQJyCfg1KrJ54z5RdJgser03nAIgpMVPHsqfeD5MnlAeP3W56cWzyxnPT8_7B8F6cY5MwBUcelSfmxrQUwDjsJunWOyaE/s320/Niall.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The Lord Captain Commander of the Whitecloaks, Pedron Niall, needs to look like he's constantly ready to chew iron and spit nails. I was reminded of Tim Pigott-Smith's iron face from <i>V for Vendetta</i>, and I think he'd do well in this part.<br />

The father and son team of Geoffram and Dain Bornhald should look like they're father and son and both look very stern. So, Michael Kitchen is now the father of Richard Dillane.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg5Uj45YAT484Fsu7QxuEowRPkAcbenKLISPySHZEUg0BR3r4QjwZer1-4F62bjmvdC1o4VTSftoIHJkCaDsqWugySfkUZnXA3kX2EaX07vcNQ8XJZgLOD8UWcPt2huYHOF-GhOXwWRfT7/s1600/Bors.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg5Uj45YAT484Fsu7QxuEowRPkAcbenKLISPySHZEUg0BR3r4QjwZer1-4F62bjmvdC1o4VTSftoIHJkCaDsqWugySfkUZnXA3kX2EaX07vcNQ8XJZgLOD8UWcPt2huYHOF-GhOXwWRfT7/s320/Bors.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Jaichim Carridin, aka: Bors, is a fairly prominent Whitecloak/Darkfriend character for the first several books, so having a recognizable actor wouldn't be a bad thing. I went with Diarmaid Murtagh. He's tall, has a stern, dour face and looks pretty tough.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMPVHktC6qBDx_gEAQVNRl1ji8_Nf33aw-NLsANpso75SsVUlmCvOCXC8XNXxxZhbuc6zeK_udvO4jLSme34VGgsC0xfZwaPv6ToKIyPD0DYTqsKU7009J3qER4ehiSmP4BpoxIt_9QI05/s1600/Asunawa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMPVHktC6qBDx_gEAQVNRl1ji8_Nf33aw-NLsANpso75SsVUlmCvOCXC8XNXxxZhbuc6zeK_udvO4jLSme34VGgsC0xfZwaPv6ToKIyPD0DYTqsKU7009J3qER4ehiSmP4BpoxIt_9QI05/s320/Asunawa.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The master torturer, ahem, <i>questioner</i>, Rhadam Asunawa, is described as tall with iron grey hair and (surprise) a stern expression. Craig Walsh-Wrightson looks pretty good to me.<br />
<br />
Gaunt, skeletal, creepy. That's dedicated Whitecloak Jaret Byar for you, and who looks creepier (and more gaunt and skeletal, for that matter) than German actor Anatole Taubman? Sure, he's not British, but he didn't stick out any in the mini-series <i>The Pillars of the Earth</i>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib30N8-4tmQOBrn6_hynx66WuBxJJE1vAgdKSorp67qL1LyCFRDmVnyHj3wy6aH1N1pcn8-WpYhHXRAkGeAW26LHNlTzSOB4tQ2JgXpXO8v_Ior6R0zOmv76yQ1qq1lAQIMfqWZAWEFhS8/s1600/Byar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="219" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib30N8-4tmQOBrn6_hynx66WuBxJJE1vAgdKSorp67qL1LyCFRDmVnyHj3wy6aH1N1pcn8-WpYhHXRAkGeAW26LHNlTzSOB4tQ2JgXpXO8v_Ior6R0zOmv76yQ1qq1lAQIMfqWZAWEFhS8/s320/Byar.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpylx_LxIlAw9SGc96w5XzMgPz4p_qt49t6jyWdKgcRBVGlrMOtho5evAiD0iG-5NLuEcOEqhPn_njw_JNT51gMsl0wFw459TqqSVwZhvWLIP3qMb2YW7y0VwOfSQcG8Uo_VI480HH83ky/s1600/Valda.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpylx_LxIlAw9SGc96w5XzMgPz4p_qt49t6jyWdKgcRBVGlrMOtho5evAiD0iG-5NLuEcOEqhPn_njw_JNT51gMsl0wFw459TqqSVwZhvWLIP3qMb2YW7y0VwOfSQcG8Uo_VI480HH83ky/s320/Valda.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Finally, I picked Johnnie Lyne-Pirkis as Lord Captain Eamon Valda, mainly because he looks stern and unflinching. I admit, casting the Whitecloaks (except Galad) was basically a task in finding stern-looking men.<br />

Padan Fain, who is kind of the Gollum of this series (no, not the Golem, that's later), needs to be played by an older actor who can play skulkingly evil but at the same time, cannot be immediately picked out as a definite villain as soon as he's on screen. David Bradley, most famous as Mr. Filch in the <i>Harry Potter</i> movies, and who has also appeared in <i>The Tudors</i>, <i>Doctor Who</i> and <i>Game of Thrones</i>, could probably sell this part pretty well.<br />

<br />
John Rawls, an Australian who I'm mostly familiar with as a vampire from <i>30 Days of Night</i>, just looks creepy, and I think he'll be a good guy to take on all the Myrdraal and Draghkar roles, including Shaidar Haran.<br />

a minor villain who, like a double-sided coin, always seems to turn up. She's actually probably one of the most oft-appearing villain characters.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsQn1de1ed57ohtMvS4wokdBZG7uPLTroFvzM7UVuk60SEHAIuNtD5tZkdSXgXWD0k41w-muXSpxs2kZMdaYO2XW4giuWPVD7wX6DI5pzAyMkuctbNp8f8RNROPNieqnA6JXb_b9dW5wEk/s1600/Daved.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsQn1de1ed57ohtMvS4wokdBZG7uPLTroFvzM7UVuk60SEHAIuNtD5tZkdSXgXWD0k41w-muXSpxs2kZMdaYO2XW4giuWPVD7wX6DI5pzAyMkuctbNp8f8RNROPNieqnA6JXb_b9dW5wEk/s1600/Daved.jpg" /></a>I cast Irish actor Anthony Brophy (<i>The Tudors</i>) in the role of
Daved Hanlon, mainly because he's as close as I can figure to what
"hatchet faced" looks like, plus I like the guy. Not a huge part,
though. <br />
<br />
For the Golem, who might make a fun recurring villain even if the plot line that introduces him isn't used, I decided it would be more necessary that the actor be a contortionist than that he possess a ton of acting skill. I almost went to the go-to contortionist/actor Doug Jones, but the part is pretty small, so I googled for others and came up with British contortionist Richard Rosson, aka Rubber Ritchie. He'll more than do.<br />

<br />
Lord Luc Mantear, and his dreamworld counterpart Isam "Slayer" Mandragoran, are two more parts that require large actors and since both are men of few words, acting talent is secondary to look and height. Spencer Wildling will play Luc, because he's more likely to sound like he belongs in that world, while Robert Maillett will play Slayer.<br />

I gave up, I admit it. Aside from the ones I know are fairly prominent, I simply did not cast the others. No TV series can fit that many characters, not to mention how I had to make sure I found tall actors with lighter skin so that they can be red-headed (or blonde). I've always wondered; why are the desert-dwellers all red-headed, light-skinned people? I mean, if Rand's heritage weren't tied in with this group, I would almost suggest changing them to look Brazilian, or something, especially since they apparently share heritage with the Tuatha'an, who are described as dark-skinned. Anyway, I only worried about casting sixteen Aiel characters. The rest will probably be featured extras or one-or-two-episode guest stars. Honestly, probably some of those I cast will be little more than that.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSV-Y8L6PB1D21ii3uZcRwYYIQqC-VOttNBjH_MDgUUIaxhWQWilvf6dueVBz5jo5YbherKagiMZX6f9M5U_jUWTJQn3ORtMLMzc9na6Vgm8up01vT3201DA-qqcKphP60DZXJOjg7W0Lr/s1600/Aviendha.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSV-Y8L6PB1D21ii3uZcRwYYIQqC-VOttNBjH_MDgUUIaxhWQWilvf6dueVBz5jo5YbherKagiMZX6f9M5U_jUWTJQn3ORtMLMzc9na6Vgm8up01vT3201DA-qqcKphP60DZXJOjg7W0Lr/s320/Aviendha.jpg" width="210" /></a>The main Aiel character, Aviendha, will be one of the series's major focus, so I'm listing her first. She must be beautiful, strong-looking and a good actress. I've heard good things about Charlotte Salt (left) but don't know much about her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI3cMKXpluaVL_Pg2CYCLnWiBJvwLKd5tYQdoF3AINGmsaGatUfWPbXuBmIToLuOWoAQ-t9IvkUk6AmLVw6zU9kM46DrwpsvWN6OVD-b7JFQfK7qHXmbuJ9woju4j5AW-yZf9FhZYV3HpD/s1600/Rhuarc.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI3cMKXpluaVL_Pg2CYCLnWiBJvwLKd5tYQdoF3AINGmsaGatUfWPbXuBmIToLuOWoAQ-t9IvkUk6AmLVw6zU9kM46DrwpsvWN6OVD-b7JFQfK7qHXmbuJ9woju4j5AW-yZf9FhZYV3HpD/s320/Rhuarc.JPG" width="214" /></a></div>
Rhuarc, the strong Clan chief of the Tardaad Aiel, presented the first major problem casting Aiel males; that they must be A) tall and B) red-headed or at least believable as a redhead. Joseph Mawle (right) is not a redhead, but looks like a good Rhuarc to me, and I liked his work on <i>Game of Thrones</i>, which is what convinced me he could play Rhuarc.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5ghJIs16vMLaX7Jt7p-1MMsF70EY772o6srLDu-fhgatE4Y_mTmB6jcrLqUJi282TNJh4qdPVXS0B1Zzr_DPQ1ARhq4zRr0t4O0texb2QdHtzXT5OhHJx3IJkvC0qeF8_39UEBkWL8F54/s1600/Bair.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5ghJIs16vMLaX7Jt7p-1MMsF70EY772o6srLDu-fhgatE4Y_mTmB6jcrLqUJi282TNJh4qdPVXS0B1Zzr_DPQ1ARhq4zRr0t4O0texb2QdHtzXT5OhHJx3IJkvC0qeF8_39UEBkWL8F54/s320/Bair.jpg" width="258" /></a>Bair will, I think, be the most prominent of the Wise Women/Dreamwalkers, at least on the show. So, I took a risk and cast a woman whom viewers will probably recognize from <i>Rome</i> and a few other series; one Lindsay Duncan (left). I realize I've already cast one of <i>Rome</i>'s leading ladies. This one will be the last, I promise (and they won't be onscreen together).\<br />
<br />

She's another I don't know the work of, but she looks like a good Aiel Wise Woman.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For Sulin, Roofmistress of the Roofmaidens of Rhuidean and Rhuarc's second wife, I chose Eva Birthistle (left). Like Sharon Maughan I'm not familiar with her work, but her look is right.<br />
<br />
The other wise women are Melaine and Seana, the latter of whom will not be around long, but long enough I felt she should be cast. Melaine will be played by Stacey Roca (left) and Seana will be played by Susannah Harker (right).<br />

As long as we're talking about Wise Women, might as well cover the villainous one too. Sevanna is the voluptuous Wise Woman of the Shaido who is one of those boo-hiss evil characters, but is supposed to be quite beautiful. I chose Rebecca Mader to play her, based on her look. <br />

Now let's move on to some male characters. Bael is described by Rand as the tallest man he has ever seen. Coming up with someone for that was a tall order (heh heh) and made me irritated (again) that Jordan has so many very tall characters. Nathan Jones (left) is an ex-wrestler and part-time actor who is from Australia, so if we don't over-burden him with lines, he shouldn't sound out of place, and he'll look the part to a T.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy2C4L7PlyWG7jy7RrHvi5IYUtF7nfyNVa9RQMpzJSO8De-OPE7tXFJblskvYz1XbRNk6C0k7OQsXTmRBLzHKSV0zA7ywqZ6wjk_cJGpnmem0p80yN0P5ps3vWdHfCfXZ-91lsayXi4xJg/s1600/Couladin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy2C4L7PlyWG7jy7RrHvi5IYUtF7nfyNVa9RQMpzJSO8De-OPE7tXFJblskvYz1XbRNk6C0k7OQsXTmRBLzHKSV0zA7ywqZ6wjk_cJGpnmem0p80yN0P5ps3vWdHfCfXZ-91lsayXi4xJg/s320/Couladin.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Couladin, of the Black Eyes Sept of the Shaido Aiel, is an antagonistic character who is Rand's main challenge within the Aiel camps in Book Four, but isn't around much longer. Even though he's mainly done gay porn, I like the look of Irish actor Seth Fornea (he's even the right height!), and besides, if <i>Game of Thrones</i> can cast porn actors why can't <i>The Wheel of Time</i>? By the way, for those curious, no, I don't watch gay porn, and I found Fornea by googling for tall red-headed British actors.<br />

Gaul is one of the more prominent male Aiel characters, in this case mostly a good guy. He's around a lot, but isn't a far-developed character, so he'll likely just be one of the characters called upon to do action scenes and the like. For that, I cast stunt actor Matthew G. Taylor, who looks perfect.<br />

Rolan is only in a couple of the books, but has a large role to play, so I decided to go with a somewhat recognizable actor; a Canadian this time. You man remember Daniel Cudmore from the <i>X-Men</i> and <i>Twilight</i> movies. He's very tall, has a deep voice, and his hair can be taken care of with a wig. <br />
<br />
Finally among the males, the first Aiel we ever meet, Urien, is prominent for one book and then never shows up again, so I didn't feel the accent was important. American soap actor Jess Rowland looks very Aiel-ish, so, I cast him.<br />

Zarine Bashere, aka Faile, the name she's mostly known by, is...well, a polarizing character, to say the least, but she's aligned with the good guys and thus belongs on this list. A lot of fans apparently think she's supposed to look Chinese or something, based on how it says her eyes are slightly slanted, but I don't think she is, myself. She fits in too well, looks-wise, in placed that a noticeably different-looking face would be commented on. So, I chose a white actress for her (although I certainly would not object to a TV series making Saldaeans oriental in appearance; I just chose not to go that way). Eleanor Tomlinson (left) could soften the annoyingness of the character somewhat.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivLj54XgXfoLCf8Hzbwy6Q1nZnb6FQooJ3nQYlZeMUADrMOzdesreo20f4OIlCORvXLczrFHhu874y1XlJPEEm7vzjztctdhl-1M4lO-LtZyOdPjn6p720HbCbVAKOa2nXhpoXxYlffvUQ/s1600/morgase.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivLj54XgXfoLCf8Hzbwy6Q1nZnb6FQooJ3nQYlZeMUADrMOzdesreo20f4OIlCORvXLczrFHhu874y1XlJPEEm7vzjztctdhl-1M4lO-LtZyOdPjn6p720HbCbVAKOa2nXhpoXxYlffvUQ/s1600/morgase.jpg" /></a>Queen Morgase Trakand is a "good" character who makes bad choices and gets humbled somewhat during the storyline. I wanted an actress who was the right age to have a child as old as Elayne but who didn't <i>look</i> middle-aged, and I think I found her in Frances O'Connor (right). She's 45 but looks ten years younger. Her coloring is also appropriate. She's a recognizable face (she's on <i>Mr. Selfridge</i> at the moment) but won't be required to be in every episode, so she can balance the two.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEql10dGZ7BaR36k4ApFrD3FNnRW0h8sZz30m20cLvChn7wwb1pAXWdxNBKmTZy3VqRhVVVB1J5_x2CNKXzhMF6S3nt4dBjh73IuQzoOxI4_UJWVXYVwCTBdg3MvyG5n7euWC3Tb0PVc6h/s1600/Bryne.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEql10dGZ7BaR36k4ApFrD3FNnRW0h8sZz30m20cLvChn7wwb1pAXWdxNBKmTZy3VqRhVVVB1J5_x2CNKXzhMF6S3nt4dBjh73IuQzoOxI4_UJWVXYVwCTBdg3MvyG5n7euWC3Tb0PVc6h/s1600/Bryne.jpg" /></a></div>
Gareth Bryne is one of those characters that I feel will probably appear more often in the series than he did in the books, because fans seem to really like him. He's a genuinely good man, and more the classic definition of the hero. The books are light on description for him, continually mentioning his "bluff" face (whatever that means), but Steven Waddington (left) just has that look of strong, don't-screw-with-him battle leader that I feel Bryne needs.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiT67k6ca-euzwFhB47h-uf4mmtmvtJbY3XRMx4zbl7xCDqCe9_U9vsAay12UBAQIvejJZfCPo5IcTiot6tOu_cmyLYGVkv7b8cBhilluwof1Vm6gufk-7YLb4ye2gt0C0T_jND1ziW14o/s1600/Elyas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiT67k6ca-euzwFhB47h-uf4mmtmvtJbY3XRMx4zbl7xCDqCe9_U9vsAay12UBAQIvejJZfCPo5IcTiot6tOu_cmyLYGVkv7b8cBhilluwof1Vm6gufk-7YLb4ye2gt0C0T_jND1ziW14o/s320/Elyas.jpg" width="213" /></a><br />
Another fan favorite is Elyas Machera, former Aes Sedai Warder turned wild Wolfbrother. He's described as "older" but I always pictured him looking kind of "wolfish" himself, and I wanted an actor that could portray that look. I'm not familiar with the work of David Sterne (right), but I like his look.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuhP5oy53DxcqABhB00BBuqJdz37-gjWLCOchAy4u5R25j1PVCSSuKU9FPRWPAXiDdIybNUPZM8HC2BAntuZKEIhvcFwDFTR-zJ1R6kzZ69zH2a5p5rZDDgaSHZfbQn98DInCLIeSTP455/s1600/Domon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuhP5oy53DxcqABhB00BBuqJdz37-gjWLCOchAy4u5R25j1PVCSSuKU9FPRWPAXiDdIybNUPZM8HC2BAntuZKEIhvcFwDFTR-zJ1R6kzZ69zH2a5p5rZDDgaSHZfbQn98DInCLIeSTP455/s320/Domon.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I actually went with an actor I'm pretty familiar with for Bayle Domon, the Illianer ship captain. As the most major character from Illian we meet, his way of speaking could get annoying in the wrong actor's hands, so I picked Vincent Regan (left) as a way of softening the impact. He's a good actor and looks like a world-weary hero, so viewers should take him seriously.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjanV2oteUiBGnBvRMTzzC1YWQL0Z9kLs9EM6K0IXmfOc23aio42PqTxmPxKMyUGEMVRTcByLo4zI-bV4a1uG1MSaoH5jm1mcqhE8oG_9G9eHrrm7vVwQ5U_72AZHcl-vFNxTzAcEjZN4w3/s1600/Martyn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjanV2oteUiBGnBvRMTzzC1YWQL0Z9kLs9EM6K0IXmfOc23aio42PqTxmPxKMyUGEMVRTcByLo4zI-bV4a1uG1MSaoH5jm1mcqhE8oG_9G9eHrrm7vVwQ5U_72AZHcl-vFNxTzAcEjZN4w3/s320/Martyn.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
For Martyn Tallanvor, I picked Ben Price (right), another young-looking middle-aged man (41) who looks appropriate to be a guardsman and appropriate to be a love-interest for Morgase. Once again, I don't really know much about his work, but he looks right.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAIojB2fpHtflW-I3WG4yTkV620A_ZgapaD2981SWFVggJaZeA_kmnR7vITztXqxXYucvpsNq6pCRxfQw6idZjrCPzSqqV9r6HNq2cBTt9geFtBnG3FB_daP8RFO14YD0eSqw38MzK9I_I/s1600/Juilin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAIojB2fpHtflW-I3WG4yTkV620A_ZgapaD2981SWFVggJaZeA_kmnR7vITztXqxXYucvpsNq6pCRxfQw6idZjrCPzSqqV9r6HNq2cBTt9geFtBnG3FB_daP8RFO14YD0eSqw38MzK9I_I/s320/Juilin.jpg" width="301" /></a></div>
Juilin Sandar is another character who's around a lot, does a lot, is a pretty popular supporting character, and yet he's kinda flat. Also no one can agree one what he looks like. He's described as being the color of teakwood, but again, considering the Mediterranean nature of Tear, I'm gonna go with Pierfrancesco Favino (left) because he has that look. He also is old enough without being too old, and looks like a nice guy who could also be a badass.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpvyBht2Q-Lr3PbH1VAVONO7LPz8LI2kQhTMJ7MT4Sx1Lsn_9pr0iIW5WErdkdbyc7NLr6azbig5HgTCDhyphenhyphen8xa3xltbtTd9IsmPduHfJar0-4Ea8qtXhr0EcQV2OMrKffhn08o9Y9uVE9x/s1600/Bashere.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpvyBht2Q-Lr3PbH1VAVONO7LPz8LI2kQhTMJ7MT4Sx1Lsn_9pr0iIW5WErdkdbyc7NLr6azbig5HgTCDhyphenhyphen8xa3xltbtTd9IsmPduHfJar0-4Ea8qtXhr0EcQV2OMrKffhn08o9Y9uVE9x/s320/Bashere.jpg" width="263" /></a></div>
And now we come to Faile's parents, Lord Davram Bashere and his lady wife, Deira. Again, I don't think Saldaeans look Chinese, but you're free to disagree with me. Lord Bashere is shorter than his wife (apparently short men and taller women is a common thing in Saldaea), so that's really mainly what I had to go on. I picked Jonathan Ryan (right) for Lord Bashere and Isabelle Champeau (left) for Lady Deira, mainly because I know Ryan is short (at least he looked it on <i>The Tudors</i>) and Champeau is of average height. They also look believable as Eleanor Tomlinson's parents.<br />

The next group of actors I selected for what I refer to as "the Caemlyn Club", as that's where we meet all of them for the first time and they later group together. To be honest, I think at least two of them will probably not feature heavily in the TV series (though I could be wrong). But the first of them, Lini Eltring, will probably be a fan favorite, because the character is a lot of fun. I chose Patricia Hodge to play her, again, based mostly on her look. I didn't want the actress to look too old, but she shouldn't look young, either. Innkeeper Basel Gill is more minor, but as he later ends up in Perrin's entourage, I figured I'd better cast him. I chose David Calder even though I'm not all that familiar with him. For his bodyguard, Lamgwin Dorn, I searched for a huge guy and finally came back to my initial choice of Paul Wight. A former wrestler (Big Show), Wight doesn't really do acting jobs that require much range or skill, but Lamgwin, let's face it, just requires him to be huge. You don't even have to give him much dialogue; it's not a dialogue-heavy part. I'll also include Breane Taborwin in this group, even though she's not from Caemlyn and isn't introduced with this group, but she does end up with them later, and even falls for Lamgwin, of all people. I picked Kirsty Mitchell for the part.<br />

Later in the books, when Mat re-forms the Band of the Red Hand, he gets two lieutenants that are pretty much always present around him; the Cairheinin Talmanes Delovinde and the Tairen Nalesean Aldiaya. They don't have much character; they're basically there to be the right and left hand for Mat, so I wonder if they'll even be given that much character in the series. Probably not much. So, I picked a couple of guys who match the look; Daniel Ansleigh for Talmanes and David Bark-Jones for Nalesean. I know what I said about Mediterranean looks, but I think Bark-Jones looks fine, plus his home country may not even be mentioned.<br />

I went ahead and cast Herid Fel because even though he's only around for one book, he has an important role. James Greene (right) looks appropriate enough. This is another part where the looks aren't that important, as long as he can convey the right character, and he can.<br />
<br />
Finally, based on the fact that Rodel Ituralde apparently becomes an important character in the last three books, I decided to cast him, despite the fact that in the books I've read he doesn't do much. Juan Chioran looks appropriate, but honestly I kinda blanked on this one.<br />

Next Up: The Aiel! I mean, holy crap are there a ton of Aes Sedai! So, I'll just come out with it and say that I've decided right now that the only ones who will be focused on regularly (aside from the ones listed under the "heroes" entry) will be Siuan, Leane, Elaida, Verin, Alanna, Liandrin, Sheriam, Alviarin, Galina and later Cadsuane. The reason is that each of them serve a real role in the series, rather than just being mentioned a lot. And even then, that list sounds long!<br />
<br />
The rest of those that I've cast I suggest should be mostly featured extras with the odd episode here and there where they contribute to the plot. Some will be revealed as Black Ajah, but I decided they would each have their time in the sun, so that when they are exposed, it will actually come as a shock.<br />

First up is Siuan Sanche. She is Tairean, which is like a mix between Greece and Spain, despite being described as having honey-blonde hair. She's also described as being tanned and tough-looking. I decided to go with an actress who looks like she could pass for Mediterranean and has played a legendary leader before: Lyndsey Marshall (left). Yes, I know she doesn't look "sturdy" like Suian, but I would rather focus on her heritage and the fact that Marshall has the "ageless" look, plus she's got talent. Also, when she and Leane are stilled, I would rather keep the same actresses in the roles.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPFgiXGZlqEuMQvyR94S_xTC-nKvRNFLwJyyViig_J5YQd2yQAzSIG6DKkGr-TtdU3ad_XdxCxTTWEbHM5iEfGIpz-VC0Q5y4uC7Y7EYgA8zEqknoYrdfE19BsdOmhKfmFplHB80XiPLi8/s1600/Leane.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPFgiXGZlqEuMQvyR94S_xTC-nKvRNFLwJyyViig_J5YQd2yQAzSIG6DKkGr-TtdU3ad_XdxCxTTWEbHM5iEfGIpz-VC0Q5y4uC7Y7EYgA8zEqknoYrdfE19BsdOmhKfmFplHB80XiPLi8/s320/Leane.jpg" width="234" /></a></div>
Leane, Siuan's right-hand woman, is described as dark-skinned, but to be honest, other than the fact that she later changes Ajah's her character is kinda flat. She's just there to support Siuan. I wasn't sure who'd fit best, but she is a prominent character even if she is kinda flat, so I picked an actress from <i>The Borgias</i>; Emanuelle Chriqui (right).<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij050CkIOaM7H-PYCtlLQwls0cAHxwP6ifpYkCSmM-44QSQRkWhJA-3vSBaxlK09ae4ed1O87OIIudeaA-VDCqtSUhMr9Ty4-ST4lUg3uivvVOwsxmUk9IVsYOKmiJBEk4zH9FUFjQKlm9/s1600/elaida.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij050CkIOaM7H-PYCtlLQwls0cAHxwP6ifpYkCSmM-44QSQRkWhJA-3vSBaxlK09ae4ed1O87OIIudeaA-VDCqtSUhMr9Ty4-ST4lUg3uivvVOwsxmUk9IVsYOKmiJBEk4zH9FUFjQKlm9/s320/elaida.jpg" width="197" /></a>Then there's Elaida do Avriny a'Roihan. Yeesh, that's a lotta names. She's one of the series' major villains who isn't actually a Darkfriend (that I know of; there's more proof that she's not than that she is) and one that viewers are gonna love to hate. Michelle Forbes (left) has that stern, haughty face and has played two amazing villains on <i>Battlestar Galactica</i> and <i>True Blood</i> in recent years. She'll make a great Elaida. <br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjETWOpJgan8mHHXk1VJOkS-9y-f6RkL4AGT2bLUExeegru0AXLHl9KLmMhxMEzjAVDyiEoxvznsDL3aeoCMSFRMLEa9hl6irN6d3YCvu4e8nInt5poNpCW33M9MobZK3s2FlYJUscImbzo/s1600/Verin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjETWOpJgan8mHHXk1VJOkS-9y-f6RkL4AGT2bLUExeegru0AXLHl9KLmMhxMEzjAVDyiEoxvznsDL3aeoCMSFRMLEa9hl6irN6d3YCvu4e8nInt5poNpCW33M9MobZK3s2FlYJUscImbzo/s320/Verin.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
Verin Mathwin will be a very popular character, I can just tell. Viewers will have a fun time just trying to figure out what is up with her. Is she good? Bad? Annoying? Funny? I can just see her catch phrase "Interesting..." entering the public vernacular. However, she's not one of the more major characters; just a prominent supporting role, so I chose Lucy Cohu (right) to play her, based mostly on her look being very close to Verin's (plump but not fat, middle years but not elderly). She seems to have a well-traveled career so she must have some talent. I chose Gary Oliver (also right) to play her loyal, omnipresent Warder, Tomas.<br />

Alanna Mosvani isn't a very rounded role; she's mainly there to be a temptation for Rand as she keeps wanting to bind him and he's having none of it. To be honest, I'm not sure how major a role she'll have on the show, but she's around for a majority of the major action scenes in the novels, so I'm gonna call her a prominent supporting character. I chose Emma Raine Walker (left) to play her, again based mostly on her look.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_-m_pwvYuLoSzhEvScpZrr1y6qo2vRWMfCqdQyJANbMmfyB_JCcfOeWt0OD60TvJDpwe_CO0DvL-oOLMWzfgL-nrmZ3qgBq9K2j-ULd8w9rqwhrj8K6KfUDZbd4oDOiRpoq2ToEsNavqA/s1600/Sheriam.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="199" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_-m_pwvYuLoSzhEvScpZrr1y6qo2vRWMfCqdQyJANbMmfyB_JCcfOeWt0OD60TvJDpwe_CO0DvL-oOLMWzfgL-nrmZ3qgBq9K2j-ULd8w9rqwhrj8K6KfUDZbd4oDOiRpoq2ToEsNavqA/s320/Sheriam.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Sheriam Bayanar will actually be a fairly large role, as she is kind of a sympathetic antagonist for the main female characters, especially once she starts holding court in Salidar. Jemma Redgrave (right) is a recognizable actress who fits quite well into a large, but still recurring, role.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTzEYf6APNBXjkyquKir0IVKCtVW0PrnTFbz7I7an6WUQxrlnEbao6XUl3dyuZOv_MG_eCd8XMl6BMFobDK5Bjhb_pIc2VxFGj7Ivx_E6_Yby25_IohTHybRgXHtHm74MZCmB5rIgYkhuR/s1600/Liandrin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTzEYf6APNBXjkyquKir0IVKCtVW0PrnTFbz7I7an6WUQxrlnEbao6XUl3dyuZOv_MG_eCd8XMl6BMFobDK5Bjhb_pIc2VxFGj7Ivx_E6_Yby25_IohTHybRgXHtHm74MZCmB5rIgYkhuR/s320/Liandrin.jpg" width="258" /></a></div>
Liandrin is Black Ajah (not really a spoiler; it's one of the first things we know about her) and a haughty bitch with a pretty face and blonde hair. The first time I read the books I pictured her as Claire Kramer (from <i>Buffy</i>) but she'd be too old now, and I'd prefer someone who looks like they belong in a period piece, which Kramer doesn't. Annika Hammerton (left) looks enough like her, and is English, so she should fit pretty well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz2IJPnfV_FUC053LHl8fUOtpY9paN3e6wvt_ALgE4Feqs1r9DiKS-pQaFgbZfw21EG-LzdtL_3cB7NN3VZ7Z6ZDo1BM0r3lkaETH2mfzMfPVB3Mp6HyVco6hIi_M20L3o7ZU2EvUYvHGv/s1600/Alviarin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz2IJPnfV_FUC053LHl8fUOtpY9paN3e6wvt_ALgE4Feqs1r9DiKS-pQaFgbZfw21EG-LzdtL_3cB7NN3VZ7Z6ZDo1BM0r3lkaETH2mfzMfPVB3Mp6HyVco6hIi_M20L3o7ZU2EvUYvHGv/s320/Alviarin.jpg" width="205" /></a></div>
Alviarin Friedhin, another Black Ajah and the most prominent one, as she becomes the true power in Tar Valon with Elaida as her puppet, is cold-eyed, cruel and beautiful in an evil way. There are a lot of people who swear she's blonde, but I can't find that anywhere in the text. Jo Marriott (right) looks good for this role. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXrePjtkt-Qz-PpGrQxn7DvzmcARs1iIUcqTWfNB0o-ci6oHqeWOM89Udj-b-MjfVXq4k7u78sDpoWhK977ynMFKoOV_rKe-kCnKQtFo8CRVyDxbqq0-kB1-JnaNh_VrclFh-lW7fEsvD1/s1600/Galina.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXrePjtkt-Qz-PpGrQxn7DvzmcARs1iIUcqTWfNB0o-ci6oHqeWOM89Udj-b-MjfVXq4k7u78sDpoWhK977ynMFKoOV_rKe-kCnKQtFo8CRVyDxbqq0-kB1-JnaNh_VrclFh-lW7fEsvD1/s320/Galina.jpg" width="258" /></a></div>
Galina Casban is another early-revealed Black Ajah who spends a majority of her time a captive of the Aiel. She is generally described as "round-faced", while still beautiful. Sounds like Laurie Hagen (left) to me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvgkt45ngKDCkNGjeG785UQE40OX62-zfcFtmAi5oaiRW6d4n12ZoC6YdueicCMHY2U_oefk0mieY28Cys80d5gim51Jfb1Fl4K52RC_KwykrtyXpnWf3Ubuyc7ra0qCWXz71FwytD50ku/s1600/Cadsuane.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvgkt45ngKDCkNGjeG785UQE40OX62-zfcFtmAi5oaiRW6d4n12ZoC6YdueicCMHY2U_oefk0mieY28Cys80d5gim51Jfb1Fl4K52RC_KwykrtyXpnWf3Ubuyc7ra0qCWXz71FwytD50ku/s320/Cadsuane.jpg" width="207" /></a></div>
Finally, Cadsuane Melaidhrin more or less takes over for Moiraine as Rand's primary Aes Sedai counselor after Moiraine's disappearance. She is very old, even for an Aes Sedai, condescending and a character I think viewers will have a great time with. Initially I pictured her as Maggie Smith, but Smith is just too old (and too busy), but Samantha Bond (right) can pull this off no sweat.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I'm not doing a write-up for the others. Now we've reached "featured extra" territory, and while I felt the roles needed actresses in them, I don't feel like I should explain why I chose whom. Each of them I just tried to get as close as possible to the way the books describe them.<br />

</div>
Before we get started, I'm gonna point out the obvious, and that is that I didn't cast Aginor and Balthamel. The reason is that the two are just such non-characters in the books. I fully believe that they can be just one-shot featured extras or left out completely (until they return in new bodies), but then, I'm of the opinion that they should be used exactly once, played by featured extras. One of them can be an elderly man with make-up to make him look like he's rotting and the other by a stuntman extra with a mask on. They will be used in one episode for the showdown between them and Rand, and at some point it will be explained who they actually were in life. That way, when they do show up in new bodies later, it can be explained who they used to be. I just don't see a point in looking for actors that show up very briefly, both covered by either full-face make-up or a full-face mask.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Another point: it might be a fun think to have several Forsaken introduced as other characters first, sort of similar to how it was set up that the Cylons could be any one of the characters: Selene, Samon, Jasin Natael, Ghyldin, Gaebril, Basene, Lord Brend, etc. could be revealed as Forsaken almost immediately after being introduced, and the others could be held until the Darkfriend Social.<br />
<br />
Now, with that out of the way, let's move on to the others.<br />

Ishamael, aka Ba'alzamon, is more or less the "big bad" of the first three books, and will probably fill that roll for the first season (maybe two!) of the show. Of course, for most of that he's gonna be spitting fire from his face, so the best option is to go with a guy known for playing scary people that isn't also so big a name that covering him up with FX will be a problem. So Julian Bleach (left) is the best choice. He plays Machiavelli on <i>The Borgias</i> and was also the most recent Davros on <i>Doctor Who</i>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHqjE0LCrAcLQAPXKEqc71P9-zpAwydKNFN4CAeqUKJw-BAalG1R0XDYKEtqcgX1cqH-9oN5Gf9Cp_fos37v5sPLGe3rN_nhRgGDaUK028Mzbdi0tBxvMp3O_4lgaR2viOsUDhQ8R43rEZ/s1600/Lanfear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHqjE0LCrAcLQAPXKEqc71P9-zpAwydKNFN4CAeqUKJw-BAalG1R0XDYKEtqcgX1cqH-9oN5Gf9Cp_fos37v5sPLGe3rN_nhRgGDaUK028Mzbdi0tBxvMp3O_4lgaR2viOsUDhQ8R43rEZ/s320/Lanfear.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Lanfear is such a major character during her time in the books that casting a recognizable face is not a problem. Michelle Ryan (right) is beautiful in a dark, mysterious and possibly dangerous sort of way, and I know she could play a demented "jilted lover" well. She will also play Selene; since Rand has never met Lanfear before (and neither will have viewers) I don't think she needs to disguise herself. All she needs to do is adopt a sweet personality that she drops as soon as Rand realizes who she really is. Think Catwoman pretending to be a scared maid until Bruce Wayne mentions that his safe is uncrackable.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlZG4xsAOYlYnBsMHgpXC49nUd244H6k6wZkNWeh1pdZOiA_V6LyrTRrIJ_MJFP6eh8hyphenhyphenbf_vrJ0J6ugIaXse2knsdTNEOiGJk9kD4O3QXOJmJJPK7jvf9wo4ccELn1AV6H3QYbe_wkytP/s1600/belal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlZG4xsAOYlYnBsMHgpXC49nUd244H6k6wZkNWeh1pdZOiA_V6LyrTRrIJ_MJFP6eh8hyphenhyphenbf_vrJ0J6ugIaXse2knsdTNEOiGJk9kD4O3QXOJmJJPK7jvf9wo4ccELn1AV6H3QYbe_wkytP/s1600/belal.jpg" /></a>Be'lal only shows up briefly toward the end of the third book, but this is after a whole book in which is character is behind much of what happens. I think he should be shown masquerading as High Lord Samon for a while before he reveals who he really is. Simon Ward (left) knows how to play major villains and I think he'd do well here, but really, this is a role that it would be easy for an actor to define considering he gets so little to do in the book itself.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHcQ4W3LQ-BbEnKorBlSXq4vHYKdrjoUBpCWCzfSrj9TKp03xXIxd92XASzfPb2o188jgasMj8846_bukN0kyLJxIlMf9RKgaEsO1zxM5Y4vI44jaiVmfKNidcGkP4lQkJs4yq85KG5Xlp/s1600/asmodean.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHcQ4W3LQ-BbEnKorBlSXq4vHYKdrjoUBpCWCzfSrj9TKp03xXIxd92XASzfPb2o188jgasMj8846_bukN0kyLJxIlMf9RKgaEsO1zxM5Y4vI44jaiVmfKNidcGkP4lQkJs4yq85KG5Xlp/s320/asmodean.jpg" width="212" /></a>I chose Hans Matheson (right) to play Asmodean, because he's a great actor and looks very similar to the character as described. He could find the middle ground between a man who used to be a pretty bad guy and a man who's a shadow of what he once was and is changing to be good. He's a fairly recognizable name at this point, but then, Asmodean can very easily end up in the main cast, considering he starts out as a hidden Big Bad and then become's Rand's reluctant trainer just after having his power cut off. As for the mystery of who kills him, I don't think we should leave it a mystery on the show the way the books did. Fans have already had enough fun trying to guess at his killer, and since we now know who it is, there's no reason to keep the mystery on the show.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioABFPZFP_h81HAe3el7YJB4nN1A0ZS9rawurI5rbI5VZj-gpx4G74-I7WDcTsxoS_m6pxGTrlKXltNGsiXe_Wv7GiUKsf2-jmh-PcC-SReMgfxvQ1jr5IHO-4XjULe2zJkkUXWUPGFouh/s1600/Moghedian.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioABFPZFP_h81HAe3el7YJB4nN1A0ZS9rawurI5rbI5VZj-gpx4G74-I7WDcTsxoS_m6pxGTrlKXltNGsiXe_Wv7GiUKsf2-jmh-PcC-SReMgfxvQ1jr5IHO-4XjULe2zJkkUXWUPGFouh/s320/Moghedian.jpg" width="192" /></a>Moghedian is a hard role to cast because she's a pretty major character for exactly one book (mostly using the name Ghyldin), and after that she only appears sporadically. I decided to go with an unknown for her, and based the casting choice entirely on her look. Her name is Montserrat Lombard (left), and I like how she can look so sneering and dismissive, not to mention scheme-y. She definitely looks like someone who would be thought of as spider weaving webs of deceit. Yep, I like her for Moggy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg80OLOmpmb3klEKw6R6NJA4gPs1UPM9_Pxy_s38dtQN45C1PfRHinVXLOX0rjlteq2Szz4NBINuWqLJXskuYQ8hznsIWQuL5MZOcu9IKHVyHczR0OpdRTOeTZ53MDOwWeJE6MC_tfGHNnu/s1600/Rahvin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg80OLOmpmb3klEKw6R6NJA4gPs1UPM9_Pxy_s38dtQN45C1PfRHinVXLOX0rjlteq2Szz4NBINuWqLJXskuYQ8hznsIWQuL5MZOcu9IKHVyHczR0OpdRTOeTZ53MDOwWeJE6MC_tfGHNnu/s320/Rahvin.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
Rahvin is another like Be'lal, who gets killed very shortly after his big reveal. Yes, he gets a few scenes as Gaebril first, but really, he doesn't have much to do other than try to corrupt Morgase and then die. So, I picked a darkly handsome unknown actor, Giacomo Gonnella (right). He's best known for guest roles on <i>Rome</i> and <i>The Borgias</i> but he plays bad guys well. I think he'll serve as Rahvin. Maybe his role can be expanded a bit for the series, like I suggested for Be'lal.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi93wgpU2f3kEMhjVHLykqXKlSXI34Wxskl9tkBzi50apjN_ZhZX1ObpgFDYJpDJ9aRotvHAiwsNT8oHriIyEst7TylXGCTCFfVbtXcVUvt8azTh-T1MaxgDXden0gc3c7XBpYVvSlj4NLr/s1600/Graendal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi93wgpU2f3kEMhjVHLykqXKlSXI34Wxskl9tkBzi50apjN_ZhZX1ObpgFDYJpDJ9aRotvHAiwsNT8oHriIyEst7TylXGCTCFfVbtXcVUvt8azTh-T1MaxgDXden0gc3c7XBpYVvSlj4NLr/s1600/Graendal.jpg" /></a>Graendal is probably one of the more popular Forsaken, and definitely one of those that's around the longest. She's described as beautiful, red-headed and shapely, with an hour-glass figure. Polly Walker (left) pretty much played exactly this character on <i>Rome</i>, and considering that Graendal is a pretty major character, I don't have any issue at all casting a well-known actress in this role.<br />
<br />

Sammael spends most of his scenes verbally sparring with or alternately working with Graendal. He's kind of a background character, mostly, but an important one who does get a good bit to do. You'll need a solid actor for him. He's described as being blonde and compact, but thick. Sounds like Mark Lewis Jones (right) could pull that off. Yes, I know, he was on <i>Game of Thrones</i>, but it was in a relatively minor role for two episodes, so having him play one of the Forsaken shouldn't be that big an issue. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbgT6FQBR3I74sCTRAQ6XGmf7EfKm-gcjsCPeVCZVNkZMTc8I1-MKEQK1j-MTuEKOwaiO8OUUN4yxL8J60K8uVmROOqmSUnAMaYC-Ee56ZjU6202M-VTNE04mtzgXOidq5QbfewBmeA-OD/s1600/Mesaana.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbgT6FQBR3I74sCTRAQ6XGmf7EfKm-gcjsCPeVCZVNkZMTc8I1-MKEQK1j-MTuEKOwaiO8OUUN4yxL8J60K8uVmROOqmSUnAMaYC-Ee56ZjU6202M-VTNE04mtzgXOidq5QbfewBmeA-OD/s1600/Mesaana.jpg" /></a>Mesaana's look is barely described in the books, but her disguise is. Once again, I don't have a problem using her disguise as her main persona. The book even says she looks much like Danelle, the Aes Sedai she was disguised as. She's not a huge character, either, so I went with little-known actress Rosanna Lavelle (left). My thought is that for most of the series she'd be Danelle, and only during the Forsaken's social would the viewer find out she's Mesaana.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjENUStdeJj8rmio3_YYdySb2TknnnrX7mKwVxTciW5yk-SrNhf8YdbuGmDeMNQooUwwZADr-2cHDjoZiTS20SryAGBmEGgsIlqoB9e5YR8lmTXcRKL6yjuitZYxhS5lOGGBGq4zrhOze9-/s1600/Semhirage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjENUStdeJj8rmio3_YYdySb2TknnnrX7mKwVxTciW5yk-SrNhf8YdbuGmDeMNQooUwwZADr-2cHDjoZiTS20SryAGBmEGgsIlqoB9e5YR8lmTXcRKL6yjuitZYxhS5lOGGBGq4zrhOze9-/s320/Semhirage.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
When it comes to Semirhage, I'm all for introducing her a bit earlier, even if she's just Anath for the first little while after she's introduced. You'd need a beautiful black woman for the role, who can also look dangerous. I'm thinking someone like Cynthia Addai-Robinson (right) would be perfect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijFFnIdTZdxXKOS4g8tF32CHJ2XPXlZNqVHZgYvoy6OqUgKsIH7YJ4WTmHSR20mAqhxznqbVfOMrnQoFg2v-YVaOOo20Wj8h948aPyzUo0UM8IxQEJn1qTsNrgp2evifi-lc-ix70Vg5GF/s1600/Demandred.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijFFnIdTZdxXKOS4g8tF32CHJ2XPXlZNqVHZgYvoy6OqUgKsIH7YJ4WTmHSR20mAqhxznqbVfOMrnQoFg2v-YVaOOo20Wj8h948aPyzUo0UM8IxQEJn1qTsNrgp2evifi-lc-ix70Vg5GF/s1600/Demandred.jpg" /></a></div>
Shock of shocks; a Forsaken that isn't introduced as someone else first! Demandred is described as looking dour and sour pretty much all the time, and he mostly works behind the scenes, so he's not one of the flashy ones like Graendal or Lanfear. I like Joel Tobeck (left) for him.<br />
<br />

<br />
And now the new generation: five of the Forsaken later show up in new bodies; Aginor becomes Osan'gar, Balthamel becomes Aran'gar, Lanfear becomes Cyndane, Ishamael becomes Moridin and finally Graendal becomes Hessalam.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6pGhJhoskq79WY36eGT22moqMZkGydVP9HU9h-Zr0PQxqPmFA0s9S9LoU8EFxLWfAx1oyaZXbyNAnmREDrnOT3T5CFd3I_aUwALjwHOyxLeTPHrTNOcRE0ZqTZBnJv9CEW1emgDTkIHTp/s1600/dashiva.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="136" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6pGhJhoskq79WY36eGT22moqMZkGydVP9HU9h-Zr0PQxqPmFA0s9S9LoU8EFxLWfAx1oyaZXbyNAnmREDrnOT3T5CFd3I_aUwALjwHOyxLeTPHrTNOcRE0ZqTZBnJv9CEW1emgDTkIHTp/s320/dashiva.jpg" width="320" /></a>Aran'gar and Osan'gar spend almost the entirety of their time in the story infiltrating the Asha'man and the Salidar Aes Sedai, respectively, under the assumed names Corlan Dashiva (Osan'gar) and Halima Saranov (Aran'gar). Dashiva is described as having a plain, creased face with lank hair and is "not young." Sounds like Ned Dennehy (right) could do that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfQaA9vjHcWrEdIVcgQ0Sl5bGwNoeXRyINWRbfO2T1uaDpfOXqAIGMbXwG9MuDuZObbWKZWDtcCbBYltYKOe080PL3aePowINrNjJUatz_rwscGlFsTPO38-p-GSiPb_NWL83udnQcCRyX/s1600/Halima.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfQaA9vjHcWrEdIVcgQ0Sl5bGwNoeXRyINWRbfO2T1uaDpfOXqAIGMbXwG9MuDuZObbWKZWDtcCbBYltYKOe080PL3aePowINrNjJUatz_rwscGlFsTPO38-p-GSiPb_NWL83udnQcCRyX/s1600/Halima.jpg" /></a></div>
Halima is described as quite beautiful with big eyes and voluptuous. Again, not a huge part, so she doesn't need to be played by a big name. I chose Rosalind Halstead (left) for her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0myE_xYNw-z2gRHuc0c6z7MeHOF2QAxYnpF0g1roefFOSXMbj-9sslF2WAXmUH8QZ-NzrjrRPA-O46uwIBSSgi4sviBzKcvRGsFRV2l4n0M5LdBYH8U7oqFnjYYNzaHqd17jxZF8km5MT/s1600/Cyndane.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0myE_xYNw-z2gRHuc0c6z7MeHOF2QAxYnpF0g1roefFOSXMbj-9sslF2WAXmUH8QZ-NzrjrRPA-O46uwIBSSgi4sviBzKcvRGsFRV2l4n0M5LdBYH8U7oqFnjYYNzaHqd17jxZF8km5MT/s320/Cyndane.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
Cyndane shows up after Lanfear's death, and is described as being pretty with silvery-blonde hair. Not much is required for this role, especially since she becomes one of the lesser Forsaken. I chose Kari Corbett (right) to play her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFyObVm9TqY_9CN-o3umqFJQNJ4lk-X_vKCthsvg4-KwX53Mv-WgiK6OBoMj64uReBBKiV6oA1WfxwOfJdOLZlbE_xND42dxH-EoUjAHTnzmaPu5UByJ78W_yPhV9gz3_2uBvboiOjTC02/s1600/Hessalam.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFyObVm9TqY_9CN-o3umqFJQNJ4lk-X_vKCthsvg4-KwX53Mv-WgiK6OBoMj64uReBBKiV6oA1WfxwOfJdOLZlbE_xND42dxH-EoUjAHTnzmaPu5UByJ78W_yPhV9gz3_2uBvboiOjTC02/s1600/Hessalam.jpg" /></a></div>
Hessalam doesn't show up until the last book, but it's kind of an anti-climactic role; just a way to show that Graendal has been humbled and turned into an ugly old woman. Sue Johnston (left), with some generous make-up, should be able to handle that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsuqMdQudaYFNwWrLEHpPbWG_RvOBG9ZJv5LZz3slgzLdX8hBOOdQ1Vnbehkgrz_WS4SQNY8ubJ_L2AMOPEcs4c-w6Loyc-HXNHsMgL3rvaiMkoEDqe475X1TX525ecqQ3F0uDXe6vJTk-/s1600/Moridin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsuqMdQudaYFNwWrLEHpPbWG_RvOBG9ZJv5LZz3slgzLdX8hBOOdQ1Vnbehkgrz_WS4SQNY8ubJ_L2AMOPEcs4c-w6Loyc-HXNHsMgL3rvaiMkoEDqe475X1TX525ecqQ3F0uDXe6vJTk-/s320/Moridin.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
I saved Moridin for last because he basically becomes the new Big Bad among the Forsaken, being chosen as Nae'blis and all. He's described as being a dark-haired, dark-skinned, handsome young man with large muscles. My pick is Paul Telfer (right), who once upon a time was my choice for Perrin, but is now too old.<br />

I'll be honest here. I'm not familiar with a lot of the work of two pretty major players from the books. I picked them on looks alone (I didn't think voice was important) and picked Hanna Mangan-Lawrence (left) of <i>Spartacus</i> fame to play Egwene al'Vere. If any of you have any objection to that, please let me know, but I'm talking in terms of acting skill, so if all you have to say is "she's ugly", well, sorry, not gonna cut it. To me, she looks very similar to how I've always pictured Egwene, and at 21, she's a good age, too. Now, this is the first role I would suggest re-naming for the series proper, mainly because with <i>three</i> major characters whose name ends with an "aine" sound, I think her name should either be changed to "Gwen", or at least pronounced "ee-Gwen", not "ee-Gwayn", as Jordan said it.<br />

For Princess Elayne Trakand of Andor, I picked Amber Marshall (right), a 24-year-old Canadian actress that I'll admit, I mainly picked because she looks like a pretty good Elayne and I felt like we needed some more Canadians in the cast (Canadian filming laws, and all that). She's the right age, the right look, and from what I can tell the right talent, and she's already made a name for herself, starring in <i>Heartland</i>.</div>

I decided to make her noticeably older than the other two lead women, mainly because I want her to be closer in age to the actor playing Lan. Halley has a wide range of emotions, but she does prickly and angry well, which we all know Nynaeve must have.<br />
<br />
For Moiraine Damodred (right), I went with an American, and one of the few well-known actors in my cast. I picked her because she's basically the "Gandalf" for this series, and it won't hurt to have someone in the role audiences are familiar with. She's definitely got the ageless thing right (does she <i>look </i>40 to you?) and even at this stage in her career she's still playing "young" characters. She's also got a range and although she's mostly known for comedies, I believe she has the chops to play Moiraine. As for the accent, I'm less concerned about whether she can sound "British" and more concerned that she come up with a "voice" that doesn't sound out of place (a la Peter Dinklage of <i>Thrones</i>). I think she can.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidSB1RCLUsT4_NmZgtnQf8sVXCzJQXfJjO8QiK6Ycf2mH519F2y1hPgbPSO9e-aUOAxYV74mNdudtMUbeMPgolbd3euvSmVerA6nedlzH7NXGEiTGgin1QFHDk_PtIMVUFLAe099T56WEO/s1600/Lan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidSB1RCLUsT4_NmZgtnQf8sVXCzJQXfJjO8QiK6Ycf2mH519F2y1hPgbPSO9e-aUOAxYV74mNdudtMUbeMPgolbd3euvSmVerA6nedlzH7NXGEiTGgin1QFHDk_PtIMVUFLAe099T56WEO/s320/Lan.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
The role of a'Lan Mandragoran (better known as Lan) was a tough one to cast. I knew I didn't want a huge name here because Lan is a man of few words, but I didn't want a muscle-head who couldn't act, either. So, I finally settled on Dave Legeno (left), a former MMA star turned actor that you may remember from the later <i>Harry Potter</i> movies (he played Fenrir Greyback). He's a good enough actor for this role, and will look convincing while fighting, plus he's 6'3", so he's got the height going for him.<br />

To me, Thom will always look and sound like him. He's a bit older than Thom is described, but honestly, I'm not worried about that. Like Moiraine, I'm also not worried about his accent. All he has to do is play his best Christopher Lloyd and we'll have ourselves an amazing Thom.<br />

When researching young British actors for these roles, I came across Dakota Blue Richards (left), who played an androgynous character on <i>Skins</i>, and judging from the pic at left, she did so pretty well. It may be type-casting, but I like the idea of her as Elmindreda "Min" Farshaw. She may be younger than the others (19) but she's just...Min. The character's age isn't really important (even if it does say she's older than Rand). She also carries some fantasy cred; she played Lyra in the film <i>The Golden Compass</i>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiot-l0A8Dv1sw2GSsfufw0hzxJY3pp6X9PzBjMjYLbrnqO6A7twBIvksHgENNLujlzT-852sKkzo5i6kO9aMMRZiX1Y4QOX-5D60Mba9IfqZotPcO0QgAcIEnCUAeALGF-lcZGIu7gXjcD/s1600/Loial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiot-l0A8Dv1sw2GSsfufw0hzxJY3pp6X9PzBjMjYLbrnqO6A7twBIvksHgENNLujlzT-852sKkzo5i6kO9aMMRZiX1Y4QOX-5D60Mba9IfqZotPcO0QgAcIEnCUAeALGF-lcZGIu7gXjcD/s320/Loial.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Then there's Loial the Ogier. There's been much debate about whether the Ogier should be brought to life by FX or make-up. I'm gonna vote make-up, combined with forced perspective shots, as many shots as possible where Loial is the only character in frame, and a bare minimum of digital splicing in order to make him look huge. For those who suggest no TV studio could afford make-up like that, I remind you that the various <i>Star Trek</i>s, plus <i>Buffy</i>, <i>Angel</i>, <i>Babylon 5</i> and numerous others came up with inventive make-up looks for their alien/demon characters, and on pretty modest budgets for the most part. Loial's make-up shouldn't be that hard. Of course, it will help to have a freakin' huge actor with a really deep voice in the role. Enter John DeSantis (right), a Canadian (!) actor mostly known for playing Lurch on the short-lived remade Addams Family series in the late 90's. Mr. DeSantis is 6'9" and has a voice so rumbly-deep the first time I heard it I could swear it was computer generated. DeSantis won't even need that many perspective shots, he's so big. And you can't really see it in the picture but he really does have sausage-thick fingers like the Ogier is stated to.<br />

For Rand al'Thor, the central character and, for me, hardest role to cast, I ended up selecting <i>Merlin</i>'s Tom Hopper. Coming from a popular fantasy show can't hurt (he plays Percival), plus he's 6'5" (Rand's height actually is important) and would look believable with red hair (his hair actually looks a little red to me).<br />
<br />
The only real drawback is that as of this writing he's 28, but I doubt that will cause that much of a problem because he has a boyish face, which will fit with the fact that I aged the main cast for added realism (and the fact that if it looks like a show for teens, adults may feel silly watching). I'll admit I don't know much of Hopper's work (I don't watch <i>Merlin</i>), but in some youtube clips I watched, I found him to be perfectly acceptable for Rand.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh44e6wWsN1EUxCtz2LNK6ca5rO2Wie_aye714_q3nd4jcn7tfY43El_8E5fcEwz8GyhXma6FKAFi2I0qoLRwyblmsUEeGL0RWz30XML2T_d0s57xdVlsr8DPokVCG318KpJZh6A6Ve7U7-/s1600/Perrin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh44e6wWsN1EUxCtz2LNK6ca5rO2Wie_aye714_q3nd4jcn7tfY43El_8E5fcEwz8GyhXma6FKAFi2I0qoLRwyblmsUEeGL0RWz30XML2T_d0s57xdVlsr8DPokVCG318KpJZh6A6Ve7U7-/s1600/Perrin.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
For Perrin Aybara, I decided to go with <i>Game of Thrones</i>'s Joe Dempsie (right), and while he won't be the last name I pick from that show, I tried very hard not to cast too many people from there. I picked him because when I saw how much muscle he put on for Season Two, my first reaction was "Holy crap, that's Perrin!" At 25, he's a good age for the role, and like I said, he's already got the muscle. He also seems like he could play a genuine nice-guy. Perrin's a true gentleman, and a teddy-bear with muscles, and Dempsie is a likeable actor. Also, unless they take a seriously different direction than the books, Dempsie's contract for <i>Thrones</i> shouldn't last very long past this coming season.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvrjUJTRJPdNmnsZQtgmY3T5lR_tla356JLc0eyON3R9dwtNuNuiOnJlmdaaIG0fQl6fOEnJjDV8G8rNxFanTw5RibYb5nRK9FsYQ9BAYCTCREJ-hhUQrtLJ83NsjmElwoBivIP6HTm1ew/s1600/Mat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvrjUJTRJPdNmnsZQtgmY3T5lR_tla356JLc0eyON3R9dwtNuNuiOnJlmdaaIG0fQl6fOEnJjDV8G8rNxFanTw5RibYb5nRK9FsYQ9BAYCTCREJ-hhUQrtLJ83NsjmElwoBivIP6HTm1ew/s1600/Mat.jpg" /></a><br />
Another 25-year-old actor, in this case Augustus Prew (left), is my pick for Matrim "Mat" Cauthon. I had a hard time with this one, but I picked Prew because he just seems like he's good at playing puckish guys, either with good hearts or without. Prew's got this tinny, high voice, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing where Mat is concerned. Like I said in my first post, I'm thinking his love of gambling and women should be played up, making him seem more like a medieval frat boy than a childish prankster. Not that this isn't true to the character at all.<br />
<br />
Next up: the major supporting heroes!WriterJoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08297293527408652148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3053173847372168074.post-72009599029727347642013-02-21T09:13:00.004-08:002013-02-26T09:11:25.423-08:00Introduction: Casting the Longest Series of Books I've Ever ReadSo, welcome to this blog.<br />
<br />
A little about why I'm doing this: I love fantasy novels. I write them in my spare time (not published yet, but also haven't submitted much yet) and I love reading them.<br />
<br />
A few years ago, I read the Wheel of Time books for the first time. I'm just now re-reading them, now that the series is complete. When I first started this series, way back in the mid-2000's, the 11th volume, <i>Knife of Dreams</i>, had only just been released and Robert Jordan hadn't even announced that he was dying yet (RIP, Mr. Rigney). Now, he's been gone a few years and the series has been completed by Brandon Sanderson. So, back into this world I delve, and I must say I'm looking forward to it.<br />
<br />
Needless to say, fantasy is starting (slowly, but surely) to crawl out of the gutter to which it has been assigned by the Literati. Thanks to the success of recent novels by the likes of George RR Martin, R. Scott Bakker and others, and the big- and small-screen success of fantasy adaptations like <i>The Lord of the Rings</i>, <i>Harry Potter</i> and more recently <i>Game of Thrones</i>, the film and television industry is starting to actually see value in a genre previously dismissed as purely for nerds and kids. The industry has long loved adapting books to the screen, this trend toward adapting them to the small screen rather than making them strictly into movies can only be a good thing.<br />
<br />
Now, before I go too much further, I'd like to direct you over to Werthead's blog for a <a href="http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/search/label/the%20wheel%20of%20television">simply excellent layout</a> of both why The Wheel of Time is better suited to television than film, and how best to go about it. He makes a number of points (over three posts) that I've thought of over the years, such as how the length of the series (<i>fourteen</i> novels, the shortest of which is 238,789 words long!) really lends itself better to a TV adaptation. If you did it as films, he argues, not only would you have to gut the story to its barest bones, but you really couldn't adapt more than about three or four of the books. The <i>Harry Potter</i> series pushed it with eight movies, and I guarantee that if any one of the films had bombed, the rest would have not been filmed. Most film series aren't allowed to go past three to five movies. He also argues (and this is a brilliant point) that at its barest, the story is not much different from the countless "hero's journey" stories that have been filmed ad nauseum (I'm quite certain it would be compared to <i>Star Wars</i> or <i>Eragon</i>). So really, TV is best.<br />
<br />
I argued online a few years ago with a guy who was just convinced that a Wheel of Time TV series would be a disaster because they could never produce the kind of visual FX, the thousands of extras, the battles, the make-up, the locations, etc. needed to do this right. And he's kinda got a point; whatever a Wheel of Time TV series will look like, I doubt it will look as polished as <i>The Lord of the Rings</i>. But with the advent of <i>Game of Thrones</i>, <i>Spartacus</i>, <i>The Tudors</i>, <i>The Borgias</i>, etc., plus sci-fi series (hey, FX are FX) like <i>Battlestar Galactica</i>, I submit that even if it doesn't look like it cost a billion dollars per episode, it's not gonna look <i>bad</i>. Unless SyFy does it, but then, even they had a couple of series (<i>Battlestar Galactica</i> and <i>Caprica</i>) that stretched a shoe-string budget pretty far and came up with some excellent FX).<br />
<br />
But then there's the fact that, as I said, there are fourteen very long novels making up the main series (I don't count the prequel <i>New Spring</i>, which quite frankly adds nothing to the main narrative), so how can you squeeze that into a TV series, most of which get five to seven seasons at max? Well, again, Werthead argues that Robert Jordan's legendary verbosity combined with the languid pace of the eighth, ninth and tenth (and perhaps even more) novels are what mainly contributes to the length. He says that once you account for Jordan's pages upon pages of description of what characters are wearing or what the room looks like that the scene takes place in, or the dozens of random internal monologues each character seems to have, then that alone cuts down on much of the length, and if the later books where little seems to happen but Jordan goes on for chapter after chapter describing how little is going on are also cleaned up, then easily three or four books could fit into one season. Werthead even believes that with an average cable season of ten to thirteen episodes, you could still fit the meat of the plots from two to three books into one season. Maybe he's right, but only with major cuts.<br />
<br />
Personally I think the cuts should go further than cleaning up Jordan's sometimes lazy writing. Thinking like a TV writer, with a finite amount of time, money and actors with which to tell the story, we're simply gonna have to cut some plot lines and characters, many of which fans consider necessary. The prime example I can think of is the entirety of the Bowl of the Winds/Ebou Dar/Kin storyline, which to my recollection adds nothing to the overall arc and is simply there to take up space. I haven't read the last three books yet, so once I'm done I may change my mind about that, but for now, that one, among numerous other plot lines, I think can safely be excised. For that matter, I wouldn't (and I doubt many other fans would) be too disappointed if the writers decided to take the <i>Dexter</i> or <i>True Blood</i> approach; adapt the first few novels more or less faithfully, then take your own direction using the same characters and the odd story arc. After all, most of <i>The Wheel of Time</i>'s appeal comes from its characters, its mysteries and its OVERALL story arc. I sincerely doubt anyone's going to be yelling "But we never got to see the Bowl of the Winds plot!"<br />
<br />
That said, it's hard to know until someone writes it whether or not elements of those plot lines, or characters introduced in them, will indeed be used in a TV series. Maybe they will be used, but only for, say, two or three episodes as a B-plot (I did say that Jordan's languid pace is what accounts for a majority of the length). Also, maybe some plot elements merely talked about in the book will be shown; therefore it's entirely possible that characters that do not recur in the novels just might do so in a TV series (just as an example, Be'lal springs immediately to mind).<br />
<br />
With that in mind, I began casting this series. I am a huge fan-casting nerd, and I cast most of the things I read. Sometimes what I read actually does get made into a series and sometimes it doesn't, but when it does, sometimes my fan-casting choices actually make it to screen (I fan-cast Peter Dinklage, Jason Momoa and Conan Stevens in <i>Game of Thrones</i> while reading the books). Oftentimes they pick someone else, but that's not the point. The point is, fan-casting is fun.<br />
<br />
But this series is <i>huge</i>, and contains an amazing number of characters. I admit, I limited myself as to which characters I would cast and which I wouldn't, and I still ended up with 148 characters to cast. That's...well, that's much larger than any TV series is going to go. I just simply couldn't decide which characters to leave out. Admittedly, some of them are from the plot line I said could be removed almost in its entirety. Others are characters that I am sure will be either extras or will perhaps show up as a guest star for one or two episodes at most.<br />
<br />
My thought was; there are so many large groups in this universe that it will be easy to have somewhere between three to five regular or semi-regular performers to be the "face" of these groups with all the others being "featured extras" that may at some point have an episode focus on them. Remember in <i>ER</i> or <i>Oz</i> how they always tended to use the same extras, and how some of those extras were later turned into actual characters? Yeah, same thought here. Be it the Aes Sedai, the Aiel, the Black Ajah, the Asha'mon, or whatever, there will have to be a couple dozen regularly-seen faces milling about in any scene featuring them, even if only one or two episodes actually give them lines.<br />
<br />
So, I cast them all.<br />
<br />
Now, here's the thing; Wheel of Time fans have fan-cast and fan-recast this series to death. There are <i>countless</i> sites or forums for Wheel of Time fan-casting (exclusively Wheel of Time fan-casting!). But the problem is, most of these fans are casting the roles as if it's definitely going to be a movie (and Werthead and I both have stated why we feel TV is better, but Wert goes into more detail), and not just any movie, but the most expensively cast movie ever made, with countless cameos and/or huge actors in small roles. One site actually has Clint effing Eastwood in the role of <i>Jaem</i>, of all people. I don't even consider Jaem a large enough role to bother fan-casting. He'll likely be played by a stuntman/extra who never speaks.<br />
<br />
Obviously the idea of casting major names in smaller roles isn't going to happen. Probably even some of the more major characters will be played by actors you've never heard of. So my approach was that of a casting director casting a <i>television series</i>, meaning smaller-named actors, especially in the smaller roles. I scoured IMDb for British (meaning from <i>all</i> British Isles), Australian, a few Canadian and even fewer American actors who mainly do TV work, and even then most of them I wouldn't call "TV <i>stars</i>"; they just get a lot of work here and there. I went low into the credits of British movies and found the actors that have only a few lines. Some of the larger roles I cast with recognizable faces, even if you can't remember where you saw them from. One of my choices (admittedly he'll look a little odd among the others, but I still think he'll work) is an 80's has-been who is still near and dear to the hearts of many.<br />

A few more added thoughts:<br />
<br />
I deliberately cast this as if it was going to be a Showtime television series in the same vein as <i>The Tudors</i> or <i>The Borgias</i>, but with less sex (if not less nudity; really, there's much more nudity in this series than people believe).<br />
<br />
The main characters are now in their early- to late-twenties, not teenagers (and Nynaeve is a full-fledged adult). Talk of them being "boys" or pulling childish pranks will be removed. They will still live in the Two Rivers because no one leaves the Two Rivers, and Mat will be portrayed less as a prankster than as a rogue who enjoys gaming and women. I did this on purpose for the same reason that the Stark kids on <i>Game of Thrones</i> are all in their twenties or mid-teens, instead of being fourteen and younger, as they are in the books.<br />
<br />
The "ageless" quality of Aes Sedai will be achieved by having actresses cast whose faces look anywhere from ten years older to ten years younger than they are. I mostly stayed away from the "elderly" (although some are in their sixties) because it's hard to look "ageless" if you're covered in wrinkles, so if an Aes Sedai character is very, very old, I cast a young-looking actress over sixty at oldest, but mostly stuck to actresses in their forties and fifties.<br />
<br />
In my next post I'll give you the central heroes and some reasoning behind who I chose and why.<br />

This blog assumes you have read all the books, so there are some pretty big spoilers ahead. If you haven't read the books, and don't want things spoiled for you, it's much better that you go read the books first!<i><u></u></i> </div>
